It was named after the undisputed leader of the American insurgents during their War of Independence and subsequent first President of the United States , George Washington .
Not to be confused with the capital of the United States,Washington D.C .; for this reason, in the United States, the state is usually called the state of Washington , and the national capital, DC (abbreviation of District of Columbia).
Washington has huge coniferous forests, which have earned it the nickname of The Evergreen State (evergreen state, or evergreen state). These forests make Washington a leader in the American lumber industry. Washington is intersected by several rivers and dotted with several lakes, creating fertile ground for dam installations.
The State of Washington is located on the Pacific coast of the United States ; It is bordered to the north by the Canadian province of British Columbia , to the east by Idaho, to the south by Oregon, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. A series of channels, to the northwest, separate the state from the Canadian island of Vancouver .

Washington Economy
Washington is a prominent agricultural state. The most important agricultural crop is corn ; hay , hops, potatoes, sugar beets, peas , and flower bulbs are also important . Washington, the nation’s leading producer of apples, is also famous for its cherries, plums, grapes, pears and blueberries.
Livestock products (milk and dairy products, cattle and sheep meat ) contribute more than a third of the annual agricultural income. The forestry industry is the most important in the state; main commercial species are Douglas fir and hemlock. The fishing industry is significant. In value, salmon contributes a third of the catch, followed by oysters, crabs, shrimp and other shellfish.
The most prominent industries are those responsible for manufacturing transport equipment, wood and derived products, such as paper, food products, industrial machinery, primary metals, printing materials and precision instruments. Washington’s economy is centered primarily on tourism and the aerospace industry.
The main industrialized products manufactured in Washington are airplanes, ships, software, electronics, processed foods, and paper and wood products. Boeing , the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, has its headquarters in the state (in Seattle) as well as its main factories. Also based in Washington are Microsoft , Amazon.com , and Nintendo America .
Washington Geography
You’ll know you’re in Washington when the rugged, wild landscape of the Pacific Northwest unfolds in front of you; you will have left the great city of Seattle just a few minutes ago.
